Biography
Ralph Borland is a South African artist, curator and researcher working on science and technology. His mixed-media installation received a class medal for Sculpture at the University of Cape Town. His Master’s thesis in Interactive Telecommunications at New York University, a performance suit for protestors, was acquired by the New York Museum of Modern Art. His PhD from the School of Engineering at Trinity College Dublin was a critical study of the tension between storytelling and user-centred design in the South. His postdoctoral fellowships investigated the African city, and identified Southern Agency in the work of South African climate scientists. His art-research post with the Institute for Humanities in Africa focused on emerging technologies in healthcare in Africa. His exhibition curation includes ‘Design and Violence’ for NY MoMA and Science Gallery Dublin, and his work has been shown at Zeitz Museum of Contemporary African Art and the Dakar Biennial.
